McAllister In Line To Return To Club In Managerial Position

It is understood that former Leeds United coach Gary McAllister is in line to return to the club in a managerial position. The club recently parted ways with manager Brian McDermott after a disappointing end to the campaign. Italian businessman Massimo Cellino, who took over at the club a few months ago, had earlier promised that he would continue to give McDermott enough time to prove himself in the job. However, the Italian, who is widely known for sacking managers often, did not show patience with McDermott and the former Reading manager was gone as soon as the season concluded.

On the club’s official website, Cellino said that he had no doubt in McDermott’s quality, but it was simply not working at Leeds United. Hence, he needed to make the change in order to make the club challengers for a promotion spot next season. Leeds have been struggling in the lower reaches of the English football table for several years, but they are within touching distance of the Premier league. McAllister is one of the Leeds United legends after having won the title with the club in 1992. He was also coach of the team for just under a year in 2008.

“Brian has been very understanding of my wish to implement a new structure. He is a great manager and a great guy. He has been unfortunate to work in such difficult circumstances,” said Cellino. “Massimo wants to bring a new energy to the club so that we can return to where we belong as a healthy football club,” said McDermott. McAllister, though, has been struggling as a manager in recent years and was recently relieved of his duties at non-league Histon. He has been out of work since December, but he has a lot of knowledge about the club.

McDermott Would Like To Stay At Leeds

Leeds United manager Brian McDermott has stated that he would like to stay at the club beyond this current campaign, but he is unsure what the future holds for him as far as this club is concerned. Leads are currently in the process of a takeover from Italian businessman Massimo Cellino. The takeover process has just completed and it has immediately thrown the future of McDermott into doubt. The manager was already sacked back in January, but Massimo Cellino decided to backtrack on his decision. Since then, McDermott’s future has been a major doubt especially with results on the pitch being poor as well.

Leeds United will be very much looking forward towards the start of the new season after this campaign has been embroiled with a lot of difficulties. This has affected the player’s form on the pitch as well. Only a few weeks ago, the club went on a very difficult run of form that threatened to put to them in relegation trouble. Towards the end of campaign, though, performance has dramatically improved and they managed just one defeat in the last five matches of the season. Despite this, they were able to finish only in the mid-table position – far away from the play-offs.

McDermott, though, is confident of leading the club to promotion if he remains as the manager.

“Leeds United fans don’t give up. Leeds United’s manager won’t give up because of that. I haven’t given up and the players gave everything (against Derby). That’s a really good side we’ve played with a great manager who’s done a fantastic job. The things that have gone on here make you a better manager because you know you can tough situations out. The next stage is the summer and building again,” said the manager after the final match of the season.
