The game of football has been put back into perspective this weekend as Leeds fans everywhere will want to offer their heart-felt support to two former players and their families. First news broke on Friday that striker Geoff Horsfield has retired from football after revealing he is suffering from testicular cancer. Following that was the deeply sad news that Feziwe Radebe, wife of United legend Lucas, lost her brave battle against bowel cancer early on Saturday.
Feziwe, aged just 34, was originally diagnosed with the illness during her husband's testimonial year with Leeds, and her passing has left Lucas devastated. She is also survived by their two young children Lucas Hugo, nine, and Owami, aged four.
Barnsley-born Horsfield, also 34, is set to undergo surgery next week, and has been informed he has a good chance of recovery after the diagnosis was made early. In spirit typical of his robust forward play the ex-Halifax Town hitman is maintaining his positive attitude, stating: 'All I'm thinking about now is beating this. I've always been a fighter right through my football career and I'm going to fight this and win.'
Geoff has the best wishes of all Leeds supporters who I'm sure will want to wish him a speedy recovery. My thoughts and condolences are also with the Radebe family at this sad time.
